Approaching Medicare Eligibility?
When to Enroll in Medicare Part A & Part B
Turning 65 Soon
-
If you are receiving Social Security benefits and meet the qualifications, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare.
-
If you are not receiving social security benefits, you have a 7-month eligibility period to enroll. However, it is recommended that you complete the Medicare Part A and Part B online application 3 months prior to your birth month. You can access the application here.
Over 65
-
If you are leaving your current employer group, contact the Social Security Administration to enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B.
-
Ideally, you should enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B three months before your current plan terms so you can request the effective date to start the day after and prevent a lapse in coverage.
-
If you wait until your plan terms, you have an 8 month eligibility period. However, to avoid Part D prescription plan penalties, you must enroll in a Part D plan no later than 63 days after your current plan has termed.
Under 65 & Have
a Disability
-
You will automatically be enrolled in Medicare if you have received disability benefits from Social Security for 24 months.
